a March moment at my home

It has been a year since I last posted any thing but I am back. I am looking forward to doing it again and to get back at it. Truth is I got caught up in face book games and in general just busy with many projects at the same time.Also I have been at work so much more than I was a year ago. So now here we go and I hope you all enjoy the future posts to come

This pic was taken on March 24 2012 here in the Niagara Region of Canada. This is very rare here about three weeks early for us to see a Forsythia in bloom.

Houses on my Block, all 100+ years old

Here are some homes on my Street in Dunnville. I hope you enjoy them. They are 100 years old +

This one is beautiful. The gardens are just lovely.

There are several houses in Dunnville, with this Block Construction. I really like it. It makes them look like they will be here a long time.

This house just became a historic society home. The lady that owns it has been true to the house and it's original character.

here is one of my favourite neighbour-hood  Homes. It is just lovely and well kept. The steps are being repainted. I love the Balcony.

Here is the little Lady on the block. This is such a lovely little house. They have the most beautiful lighting at night for it

I really like this house. It belongs to a person I know. This house is brick that was painted yellow. I thought it would look awful but it does look beautiful. It has a cottage feel about it in amongst the huge trees.

This house had large renovations done to it in the 1970's. It destroyed the 1880's style of the interiors. Now it has been restyled back to the 1880's but with all things modern.

This house and the next one next one are special to me. I have a personal interest in them. I love these two houses a lot. The one below will be familiar to people who follow this Blog as the home most featured here.

I hope every one enjoyed a small tour of my Block. I will be featuring my Home-town threw out Canada Week. Which is basically from now till July 1st.

Two Blocks from my House

A Great Blue Huron. these are very large birds and just beautiful, They are the Town Bird as it where for our town of  Dunnville

Our Centennial Fountain, It was wreaked by kids years ago, now it is used as a giant garden planter. It was very beautiful in its day.

Muddy the giant Cat-fish. This is the largest Fish monument in the world to-day.

Canadian Hockey Draped in Olympic Gold

 

Here is a Canada Moment. This was taken on Feb 28th at my home in Dunnville, Ontario. It was to show the colours for the Olympic Hockey Gold Medal Final. As we Canadians expected, we won that Gold Medal in overtime 3 to 2 against the United States. The party was on after that.
O yes, that snow. It is almost gone :)

The Grand River in March

The first picture is the mighty Grand River above the Dam. This river is the longest river in Southern Ontario. It starts near Georgian Bay and ends at Lake Erie. The largest City that is built on it is Kitchener, Ontario

The second picture is of a few Greater Canada Geese. These birds were so over hunted that by the 1920's they were almost extinct. They became protected and was to become the first successful project to protect a species in the Americas. There are so many to-day it is hard to believe that by 1930 there was less than 100 mating pair left in the world.

The third picture is of  Long Bridge, in Dunnville. The first bridge was built in the 1820's and made of wood. It was the longest Bridge in Canada at that time. This bridge was constructed in the 1950's..

The Dam at Dunnville was also constructed in the 1820's and that was to help with the water flow for the original Welland Canal. The canals that were constructed above the dam were called the feeders. They are still here but no longer used.

Lastly, Long Bridge and the Dam. What you see here is all relatively new. The Bridge being constructed in the early 1950's and the Dam was reconstructed in the mid 1990's

The Olympics come to Dunnville

What a wonderful day for our town. The Olympics came here to-day from 3 to 4 PM. A HUGE crowd came out for the celebrations at hand. I would say half the town was out on the streets for it. Vancouver Olympic Games start in February and it has a long way to go to get there. Up until  now the flame has gone from the Most Western, Northern, and Eastern points in our Huge Country. In the next day it will be at our Nations most Southern point, then off to Windsor. It will be in LONDON, Ontario for Christmas. This torch run will be when completed the longest relay in Olympic history in a single country.

A Few Dunnville Lights

With a week to go, I thought I would show a few of our town's light displays.
The First is of an Anchor that was brought up out of Lake Erie near Dunnville
The Second is for the Shipping on the lake and the Light House. There are a few light houses in the area.
The Third is for the RCAF which had a training base here during the war. That is a Harvard
the Fourth is on the side of the  Haldimand War Memorial Hospital. Which was the second hospital in Canada dedicated to the WW I dead (1914 to 1918).

We have a wonderful tree done up in the town centre, but I was too cold already for that bit, So I will do that this weekend.

4 Churches in Dunnville

Here are four lovely churches in our town, we have many of these treasures here. The top one is Knox Presbyterian, second is St. Paul's Anglican, third is Grace United, and lastly  that one is Christ Church Anglican out near Lake Erie in Port Maitland.

I will post a few more in the near future.

The Big Fish

I posted a while back a picture of the uncompleted Monument as it was being erected. It is now completed and I thought I would share it with you all. This Fish is a representation of the Mud Cat. It is about 18 meters long and wonderfully realistic. It is the largest fish monument in the world to-day.

If I have a compliant at all it is that the pole that holds up the tail is distracting. It takes away from the whole. Maybe they will add a green water leaf or something to the pole to hide it.

Not Quite Nature, a Dunnville Monument

This is the long awaited for Mudcat Monument. The world's largest as it were. They started to erect this thing this morning. For five years, people were debating it to death.  Was it necessary to have it? Absolutely not!! Is it a good thing for the town? O YES, it is! Even if people just stop to take a pic with it, it is worth it. 10 years ago we went through the same thing about a statue for the town. Crazy . We have that statue now for a few years and it is nice. People take pictures of it and it adds a little class in a town that is lacking.
Well done to those that kept the fight going.

This is a shot of our great little town of Dunnville, Ontario Canada. Population 13,000.  It is situated on the Grand River in the South East of our Great Province. It is not far from Niagara Falls to our East, Lake Erie to our South and Lake Ontario to our North.. To the West of us we have the great farms that make Ontario one of the most productive food baskets for the world. Our closest major American City is Buffalo, New York United States of America.
